Clinical Indemnity Scheme Obstetric Forum

Louise O’Rourke, a partner in the Healthcare team, recently addressed the Clinical Indemnity Scheme’s Obstetric Forum on the topic of “Open Disclosure”. The day-long seminar, held at Farmleigh House on 7 March 2012, placed particular emphasis on communicating with patients and families in difficult circumstances.

Open disclosure refers to the concept of candidly discussing adverse events that have caused a patient unintended harm, investigating the adverse event and learning from it to minimise the risk of recurrence.

Louise gave advice on the legal principles underlying the concept as it operates in the healthcare setting before highlighting key principles to be born in mind when reporting and investigating adverse events, and providing practical guidance on how the concept operates in real life scenarios.
