WHITE COLLAR CRIME BILL PASSES INTO LAW
The President has signed the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 (“the Act”) into law. The Act, which (amongst other measures) aims to give the Gardaí increased powers to investigate and effectively prosecute white collar crime, was highlighted by us in an earlier article when it was passing through the legislative process:
An additional measure which was added to the Bill before passing into law is a section which affords protection to employees from penalisation by their employers for disclosing information to the Gardaí in relation to the relevant offences described in the Act. Penalisation is not rigidly defined by the Act but is stated to include unfair treatment, coercion, intimidation or harassment and threats of reprisal.
